Modernising Scientific Careers: Career and Training Pathways Strategic Health Authorities

Band 1-4  Apprentices  NVQ new QCF qualifications derived from occupational standards  Foundation degree for associate/ assistant practitioners  Foundation degree should be mapped to the first two years of the practitioner training programme.  Generic curricula for the streams so could be delivered innovatively  Some specialised modules

Challenges for implementation  JIF funding disappears  Movement from AP role to practitioner training not practical (FD route 1 year only) ? Part time  Apprentice route to be examined  Trust priorities  Profession specific challenges

Practitioner training  Not funded 3 year BSc  ? Some funding for placement  Rotational 1st year  Placements- 10,15, 25 learning outcomes need to be delivered  Placements found by the university

Challenges for implementation  ? Attractive to students and Universities  Placements need to be managed carefully small areas may be required to take large numbers of students  Student expectations need to be managed - can they really chose their discipline?  Do we need to have the placements as set out ?  Projects?  How will the students be placed? Universities need to be sure the NHS committed to provide placements?  Profession specific challenges

Scientist training programme  Salary support band 6  Nationally recruited –process information available  3 year training scheme which includes an MSc  4X 3month rotations with perhaps a 3 month academic top up  Gone out to tender for running the courses which should start in 2011

Challenges for implementation  Scientists going into areas where there was no previous scientist training  Rotations will need to be managed  Student expectations Will they be able to choose their placements after rotation?  Existing staff how will equivalence be achieved to access postgraduate education  Not practical or desirable for some employees to progress through the training scheme

The Work in workshop  Implementation challenges- how do you think they could be solved in your areas?  Learning outcomes PTP yr 1- practical ideas how they could be delivered  Rotational requirements- How can they be achieved and how innovative can we be to ensure a good learning experience?
