WORKSHOP INFORMATION, Gdansk 16-17June 2003 WORKSHOP AIMS (2) AIM OF THE WORKSHOPS:  For potential partners – to find project partners and to get support in generation and development of project ideas with possible partners from present and “new member states”, Russia and Belarus  For programme stakeholders and JS – to provide an opportunity to get an overview on which projects are “in the pipeline”. Expanding the Project Idea Catalogue on the INTERREG III B home-page, containing project ideas (PIFs)

WORKSHOP INFORMATION, Gdansk June 2003 CONTENT (3) Four workshops on three foci WS 1: Balanced polycentric settlement structures; city- regions, urban and rural relationships WS 2: Sustainable communication links for improved spatial integration; pan-Baltic inter-modal transport strategies and ICT WS 3A: Institution building, strengthening the capacity for spatial development activities WS 3B: Institution building strengthening the capacity for spatial development activities

Measure 2.1: Promoting balanced polycentric settlement structures Current status: Available funding: M€ 11.0  10 projects approved with a very scattered picture and mixed quality  Difficult to analyse the projects contribution to Polycentricity  Many project focusing on only rural dev. actions in the urban-rural relationship (4)

Measure 2.1: Promoting balanced polycentric settlement structures Missing:  High level projects contributing to the complex objectives of supporting polycentric settlement structures  Projects focusing on urban cluster buildings and city-regions in cooperation & competition  Projects developing instruments to manage intra-regional rural-urban migration Proposal:  Target calls to emphasis high quality projects in order to meet the objectives of the measure (5)

Measure 2.2: Sustainable communication links for improved spatial integration Current status: Available funding: M€ 10.6  5 transport project, mostly concentrated in the Southern & Central BSR with different foci  No projects focusing on improved access to ICT  Additional TP projects in the pip line in the north and one broad maritime transport network incl. private actors Missing:  Pan-Baltic multimodal transport strategy projects as framework for aggregating the individual sub-projects

Measure 3: Institution building, strengthening the capacity for spatial development activities Current status: Available funding: M€ 12  Only 4 project approved with various focus; e. g. -business, environment, civil protection and sustainable cities  3 projects with high level of profession training Missing:  projects on improved capacity for better integrated BSR in East-West institution building Proposal:  Strongly encourage project applications in this field due to the enlargement process (6)
