2 Objective To share the knowledge and benefits of computer-related standards with the members of IEEE-CS chapters To set up a clearinghouse to match willing and qualified Standards speakers up with interested Chapters To plan for a presentation on a Standards topic to the Vancouver, BC, Chapter in conjunction with the Feb 2007 BOG meeting

3 Background We tried to offer two presentations on Standards in San Francisco We made the information available to the local chapter This didn’t work out; nobody came Mistake #1: we asked the chapter members to come to us Mistake #2: we asked them to come to downtown San Francisco on a weeknight Mistake #3: we didn’t give the chapter any voice regarding the speakers and topics

4 Lessons Learned Offer to speak to the chapters on their own turf Have these talks treated as regular chapter meetings Offer the chapter a selection of speakers and topics Have two modes: presentations at BOG meetings plus a clearinghouse

5 Standards Presentation at BOG in Vancouver, BC(1 of 2) We involved the Vancouver IEEE-CS Chapter people from the outset We worked through the Region 7 Coordinator to find appropriate contacts in the Vancouver IEEE-CS Chapter Phillippe Kruchten and Pieter Botman were our contacts for the CS Chapter The Vancouver Communications Society (ComSoc) Chapter also asked to participate Dave Michelson was our contact for ComSoc

6 Standards Presentation at BOG in Vancouver, BC(2 of 2) We offered three standards speakers: John Harauz and John Walz spoke to the Vancouver IEEE-CS Chapter, and Joe Decuir to the Vancouver ComSoc Chapter, on February 5 The Vancouver CS and ComSoc Chapters treated this as one of their regular meetings They both publicized it on their Chapter websites Vancouver CS Chapter: Vancouver ComSoc Chapter:

7 Standards Speakers Bureau (the “Clearinghouse”) This is our proposal for CAB to solve the problem described above We leveraged the existing IEEE-CS Distinguished Visitors Program (DVP) We also looked at the proposed Outstanding Lecturer Program (OLP) SAB is developing a roster of qualified Standards speakers who are available to address chapters CAB can contact chapters to explore interest in speakers and their topics

8 Logistics (1 of 3) Work through the Sponsor Committee Chairs Ask them to pass the word to their Working Groups Invite prospective speakers to ask to join our Standards Speakers Bureau (SSB) So far, we’ve had six applications

9 Logistics (2 of 3) Publish a list of speakers and their topics and preferred venues Chapters submit requests for speakers on topics of interest Visit requests, nominations for speakers, and comments or questions are submitted to the Volunteer Services Coordinator (VSC)

10 Logistics (3 of 3) Speakers will only commit to out-of- town engagements for which their airfare is already covered (e.g., by IEEE or a client) Chapters pay local expenses (meals, local driving, possibly hotel, etc.) Perhaps IEEE-CS will eventually provide some funding, through the SAB or CAB

11 Application for Speakers Bureau To join the SSB: Send an to attaching an Expression of Interest Include a bio (1-2 paragraphs), suitable for distribution to interested chapters Include two or three one-paragraph abstracts of proposed standards topics List locations where you can speak John Daniel will put this on the website

12 Chapter Request for a Standards Speaker To request an SSB speaker: John Daniel has developed a prototype SSB website to promote these speakers Both CAB and SAB websites will eventually contain links to the SSB website Visit the SSB website and see which speakers are available to speak in your area Send an to John Daniel, listing the speakers of interest to your chapter

13 The next steps SAB members are invited to spread the word, and recruit speakers to join SSB CAB regional coordinators will be asked to disseminate information about the speakers to the chapters in their regions Requests from the chapters will be forwarded to the speakers Speaker will communicate directly with the chapter to negotiate, accept, or decline the invitation
