RESUME BUILDING “T O I NCLUDE OR N OT TO I NCLUDE ” Monica M. Corbin-Simon, RPL Monday, August 17, 2015 (9:00 a.m.)
OJECTIVE This one hour workshop will provide ideas on what a job seeker should include or leave out of their resume. At the end of this session you will hopefully be able to answer: I.Should I use the same resume when applying for multiple positions within a company II.Are references really that important and should I include them III.How many positions should I list on the resume IV.Do I really need a cover letter V.Should I provide a resume when applying for an internal position (promotion)
Should I use the same resume when applying for multiple positions within a company? You should never use the same resume to apply for multiple positions: Clearly understand the position you are applying too Select the position that best fits your qualifications and apply If you qualify for all the positions do the following: o Talk with some employees in that division o Speak directly to the hiring manager on the specific job o You should have already built a rapport with the hiring supervisor/manager. The Same Resume
Are references really that important and should I include them? Yes, the hiring manager should not have to ask for references. You are the one who are seeking the position. Who should I list as a reference? Current or previous Supervisor/Manager People who hold a titled position People who like you REFERENCES “Really”
How many positions should I list on my resume? The number of positions listed should depend on the minimum requirements: Always list your most resent positon List positions specific to the applying positions List volunteer positions that pertain to position List all military reserve or active duty positons How Many are too much?
Do I really need a cover letter? Unless it is requested I would not include a cover letter: Use a Summary of Skills at the beginning of your resume to highlight specific skills. Most recruiters are only scanning your resume and may not even read the Cover Letter. Other companies uses software to pick up certain words so it might skip the resume as well. COVER WHAT?
Should I provide a resume when applying for an internal position? Applying from within doesn’t automatically mean you will get the position so YES it would be in your best interest: Research the positon Re-write your resume to fit the possible promotional position List all accomplishments and acquired knowledge since you’ve been employed Speak with hiring supervisor/manager to find out what qualities they are seeking for the position. The Internal Position
Your Resume helped you get the interview and you think you did pretty good so what do you do next? Send a Thank You note for the interview: Send to Hiring Manager and each panel member Highlight your accomplishments specifically for the seeking position Make sure each thank you letter is different. Don’t write one letter and change the names Always end with, I look foreword to hearing from you soon with a job opportunity. So What’s NEXT?
