Understanding Our Roles As Advisors MCC Campus Center

Campus Center Philosophy Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish; and you feed him for a lifetime.”  Stephen Covey

Philosophy Student Development Theory Provide student with opportunities to work with faculty and staff. Create intentional interventions to enhance student learning and development. Design programs that encourage and create positive growth in students.

Philosophy Student Development Theory  Students involved in the co-curricular program will master increasingly complex developmental task, achieve self direction and become interdependent.

Effective Advising Strategies  Develop relationship with officers  Agree on clear expectations  Develop goals and revisit them throughout the year  Review constitution of the organization  Establish responsibilities  Help them to see alternatives and provide prospective

Effective Advising Strategies  Be honest and open with all communication  Provide feedback on their successes and challenges  Utilize the co-curricular transcript leadership skill scale.  Hold them accountable for their actions

Role & Responsibility  Offer suggestions and perspective without demanding that organization follow everything  Assist in developing goals  Be aware of all plans and activities  Discourage dominance by individual and encourage quieter student to take initiative

Role and Responsibility  Attend all general and executive meetings  Offer ideas for projects and events  Help student find a balance between academics and co-curricular  Explain College and Campus Center Policies
