Jeremiah 6:16 (NKJV) 16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

Seek The Old Paths This morning we introduce our theme for 2015 The theme we have chosen for this year is “Seek The Old Paths” It comes from the Old Testament in Jeremiah 6:16

Seek The Old Paths Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to preach a message of impending doom and repentance to the people of Judah Jeremiah 1:9-10 Jeremiah 1:16-17

Seek The Old Paths Jeremiah 3:12-13 We see the call to repentance and the forgiveness offered if they would obey Jeremiah 4:5-7 Destruction was imminent if they did not obey

Jeremiah 6:16 In our text, we find the Lord once again pleading with Judah “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls.”

Seek The Old Paths 1. Examination “Stand in the ways and see” Each of us should examine the pathway we are on (II Cor. 13:5) How do we know if we are on the right path or not? Is the path according to God’s word?

Seek The Old Paths 2. Investigation “And ask for the old paths, where the good way is” There must be some inquiry into what is right and what is false They were looking for the good way (Matt. 19:17)

Seek The Old Paths 2. Investigation The old paths were the paths of obedience, faithfulness and righteousness It’s what God has called for since the beginning Moses warned the children of Israel about this (Deut. 28 & 30)

Seek The Old Paths 3. Reaction “And walk in it” When the old paths are found after looking for them, they were commanded to walk in those old ways Moses reminded the Israelites of this (Deut. 5:33)

Seek The Old Paths 3. Reaction God reiterated this with Joshua (Josh. 1:5-9) David passed it on to his son Solomon (I Ki. 2:1-4) This is the way in which God desired His people to walk

Seek The Old Paths 4. Compensation “Then you will find rest for your souls” There are benefits to walking in the ways of God Certainly we have the same benefits today (Matt. 7:21)
