BOSS Business Objects Shared Service Steve Rademacher – June 2009

What is BOSS? The Business Objects Shared Service (BOSS) provides highly- available shared Business Objects systems to all areas of the BP Group. BOSS was created as a result of the distributed nature of BP and the excessive cost to operate many independent Business Objects systems. All servers, software, and capacity are monitored and maintained centrally by the BOSS support team. BOSS provides a core set of reporting services with additional services available for an additional fee.

Distributed Environments Multiple BOSS environments in each region of the world Sandbox – VMware Based – for testing new versions, service packs, hot fixes and configuration changes Development – VMware Based Test – VMware Based OAT/Training – Dual VMware Based Web servers with 2 or more physical application servers. VMware based web server and physical application server for disaster recovery purposes. Production - Dual VMware Based Web servers with 2 or more physical application servers. VMware based web server and physical application server for disaster recovery purposes. Production Support – VMware Based environment purely for resolving production issues.

Distributed Responsibilities Business Groups are responsible for Adding/Removing users from the Active Directory security groups. Each Business Group pays for the number of users that they have added. Business Groups can assign any security role within their area to their users. End Users are responsible for creating/updating/deleting/debugging Universes and Reports. Universe/Report development can be developed by each Business Group or purchased from the central team. Business Groups perform their own Universe/Report migrations between the different BOSS environments

Centralized Support All server and software support is centralized. All SAP Business Objects trouble tickets can be entered centrally or entered by the Business Group. All capacity is monitored centrally. All Security Groups are created/deleted centrally. Security adds/removes performed through Active Directory. All Universe Connections are maintained and secured centrally.

Integrated into Infrastructure Network based user-ids – No more password issues in Business Objects. Vintela Single Sign-On. SAP user-ids with pass-through security (coming soon) – Will be automatically associated with network based user-ids Tied into network servers Ability to send reports to network file shares User self request silent install for client tools Security groups available for distribution and maintenance in the corporate system

Highly Available Architecture
