Energy Resources Non – Renewable Energy Resources ◦ A non-renewable resource (also known as a finite resource) is a resource that does not renew itself at a sufficient rate for sustainable economic extraction in meaningful human time-frames. Renewable Energy Resources ◦ Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. Energy Resources Energy And Environmental Technology

Non-Renewable Energy Resources A non-renewable resource (also known as a finite resource) is a resource that does not renew itself at a sufficient rate for sustainable economic extraction in meaningful human time-frames. A non-renewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption. An example is carbon-based, organically-derived fuel. The original organic material, with the aid of heat and pressure, becomes a fuel such as oil or gas. Fossil fuels (such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas), and certain aquifers are all non-renewable resources. Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone! Energy And Environmental Technology

Oil and Gas

Conventional Oil Energy And Environmental Technology AdvantagesDisadvantages Relatively low costRunning out (42-93 years) High net energy yieldLow prices encourages waste Efficient distribution systemAir pollution and green house gases Water pollution

Oil and Gas Natural Gas Energy And Environmental Technology AdvantagesDisadvantages Ample supplies (125 years)Non-renewable resource High net energy yieldReleases CO 2 when burned Low costAir pollution and green house gases Less air pollution than other fossil fuels Water pollution Lower CO 2 emission than other fossil fuels Methane (a greenhouse gas) can leak from pipelines Moderate environmental impact Difficult to transfer from one country to other Easily transported by pipelinesShipped across ocean as highly explosive LNG Good fuel for fuel cells and gas turbine Required pipelines

Energy And Environmental Technology Coal

Coal Formation and Types

Coal Energy And Environmental Technology AdvantagesDisadvantages Ample supplies ( years) Non-renewable resource High net energy yieldVery high environmental impact Low costSevere land disturbances, air pollution and water pollution Mining and combustion technology well developed High land use Air pollution can be reduced with improved technology (but adds to cost) Severe threat to human health High CO2 emissions when burned Release radioactive particles and toxic mercury into air

Renewable Energy Resources Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ◦ Solar ◦ Wind ◦ Water ◦ Biomass ◦ Geothermal Energy And Environmental Technology
