“On a day like today, Italian painter Guido Reni, was born.”

Guido Reni, was born November 4, 1575 in Bologna, Italy. Reni began studying art at the age of nine.

As a high Baroque style painter, Reni’s mood of paintings were calm and serene.

Along with this celebrated fresco, Reni painted numerous frescoes in chapels for Pope Paul V and many other patrons.

( )

Religious paintings made him one of the most famous artists of his day. He became a model for other Italian Baroque artists.

Reni’s Baroque style had evolved into complex and exuberating works of art with classical restraint.

(circa 1623)

( )(1635)

During the 17 th century, depicting female saints in a seductive manner was very popular with some artists. In Reni’s paintings he often depicted females in this same style.

(1635)

Along with religious paintings, Reni is also famous for his mythological paintings.

Bacchus and Ariadne, ( )

In the latter part of his career, Reni used lighter tones, softer colours, and exceedingly free brushwork.

(1640)

Guido Reni died in 1642 in Bologna. He was buried in the Rosary Chapel of the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna. This is the stone slab that covers Reni’s tomb.
