10/17/ B Ratios

Ratio- a comparison of two quantities by division

Methods of expressing ratios 1)2 to 6 2)2 : 6 3) FRACTIONS ALWAYS HAVE TO WRITTEN IN SIMPLEST FORM

Example 1 Compare the number of dogs to cats using a ratio

Dogs to Cats 1)2 to 3 2)2 : 3 3) SIMPLEST FORM

Ex. 2 Write the ratio in simplest form that compares the number of suns to the number of moons. Then explain its meaning.

Remember to simplify! For every 2 suns, there are 3 moons.

Ex. 3 Several students were asked to name their favorite kind of book. Write the ratio that compares the number of students who chose fantasy books to the total number of students.

Simplify the ratio. fantasy responses ___ 5 25 total responses fantasy responses total responses ___ 5 25 ___ 1 5 = ÷5 That means one out of 5 students chose Fantasy books.

Class Survey Favorite flavor of ice-cream at Hoffman’s. Log-in to ChalkUp and cast your vote.

Ex. 4 Elaine is volunteering for the local food bank. She wants to divide 35 cans of food into two groups so that the ratio is 3 to 4. Step 1Use a bar diagram. Step 2There are 7 equal sections. So, each section represents 35 ÷ 7 or 5 cans. There are 15 cans of food in the first group and 20 cans of food in the second group.
