What are Fractions? By: Greg Stark EC&I 831

What are fractions? They are used when we want to count how much of something we have when we don’t have the whole thing. Numerator Denominator Represents the number of parts into which the whole has been divided Represents the number of parts of a whole we have.

For example:

Remember: A fraction must relate to something to have meaning – what is ½? We need to have ½ of something (the whole) for it to make sense: ½ a cup, ½ a tank of gas, ½ an hour, or ½ an orange
