Presentation transcript:

The Haves and Have Nots: An Educational Experiment You are a student. Your teacher begins class by asking you to find the most recent US Census data for the population of CT. He/ She then asks: What percentage of Connecticut’s population is white? Potential Discussion Points: What does that data mean? How has that changed since the first census? How is the business ownership data reflective of the overall lack of ethnic diversity?

Overview What are the types of technology being used in education? –What do you have? –What do you want? What resources must schools have in order to provide them?

iPads Projectors Smart Boards (MimioTeach)

Critical Issues 1)How is access to technology provided equitably (or not)? 1)What is the value of technology in education (how is it used and why)? 2)How will training be provided to ensure equitable use by teachers?

Impacts on Practice Technology has been proven to positively influence student performance and engagement. It also naturally lends itself to limitless levels of differentiation. It’s an avenue to critical constructivism at its best. Let us share our personal experiences as “teachers with tech”!

Ethical Questions “Digital Natives”- Do we have a responsibility to level the playing field? Technology in homes, parents wishes for their own children (some parents oppose the technology very strongly because of their own personal reasons- does this respect cultural wishes?) Safety- Is there any true way to ensure that the internet is safe for students?
