Presentation transcript:

University of Wollongong Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Education: Sociocultural, cultural-historical and activity research

A number of projects 1. Digital play in young children (ARC funded – spoke at our Symposium) – with Dr Lisa Kervin 2. Online discussion in tertiary (University) teaching - blended courses – with Dr Janine Delahunty and Dr Pauline Jones 3. The use of iPad technologies in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Dr Rose Dixon - lead investigator

Online discussion Sociocultural view of learning – drifting away from knowledge delivery to knowledge creation in a dialogue with multiple participants (pers and teachers) Online teaching can become reductionist in a way that it takes us back to ‘knowledge delivery’ paradigm A space for online discussion ◦ Sense of belonging ◦ Knowledge co-construction

Internal T & L Grant Discussion in an on-line space does not happen ‘naturally’ We at UOW created and tested a set of online discussion guidelines for both teachers and students based in sociocultural theory ◦ To provide communication strategies ◦ To provide language choices Looking for collaboration

Collaboration possibilities and further development of ideas Do you teach a blended delivery or on- line course? Are you willing and have a capacity to test out our guidelines? Are you interested in working with us to develop those guidelines further? 5 pages EOI to applly for an OLT grant in June 2014 (due 30 November 2014)
