Population The average number of people who live in a particular area. Growth – Birth Rate – Death Rate – Rate of natural increase- Growth of the population based off of the birth and death rate

Population charts

Population Density Populations settle on habitable lands Rural- farms, small villages Suburban- areas surrounding larger cities Urban- large cities (most of the world’s population lives here) – Urbanization- small cities become large cities

Map of population density (2007)

Push Pull Factors Push- reasons why people wish to leave an area – Lack of resources (land, education, medical) – Change of climate – Escape persecution – Dangerous environment – Forced removal Pull Factors- reasons why people wish to come to a new area – Availability of resources – Job/ education opportunities – Return to family/ culture/ homeland – Be closer to holy land of religion

Types of Movement Migration- moving from one region to another – Internal migration Immigration- moving from one country to another – External migration- moving across a continent (Quickly or slowly) Example- Bantu Migrations

Effects of Migrations Cultural – Creates diversity, new culture – Discrimination Economic – Improve economy with specialized workers – Harm economy because of limited resources to sustain new people (Example- Refugees) Political – Removal of Immigrants (Example- Arizona) – Immigrants viewed as asset to government and society

Population Movement Scenario #1 My name is Sonya and I am from Mexico City. I have lived here all of my life but my family and I have decided to move to San Antonio, Texas. Mexico City is very dangerous and does not provide my siblings and I with the education we need in order to succeed. In the United States, my family would be able to work and live in a safe environment and receive the education we want. *What reasons did Sonya give for moving?

Population Movement Scenario #2 My name is William and I currently live in the United Kingdom. I moved here 5 years ago in order to get a job with a large European bank. I had to leave my family and homeland behind but now I have decided to return. Although I enjoyed living in the UK I am excited to go back home to Israel to be closer to the holy land and my culture. *What reasons did William give for moving?

Natural Resources Something found in an area that is needed for and useful to humans. N.R. are key to the success of a society Types of Resources – Renewable- can be replaced naturally – Non-Renewable- can not be replaced – Unlimited- always available for human use (Sun, wind, water = all used to create energy)

Trade Most basic version of the economic system Exports- resources and services a country sells to others Imports- resources and services a country buys from another

Economic Systems Economy- the production and exchange of goods and services among a group of people Traditional- Goods and services are traded, rarely use money Command- production is decided on by the government (govt. owns the resources and businesses) Market- production is determined by supply and demand

Economic Development GDP- Gross Domestic Product- total amount of goods and services produced in one year Developing Nations- low GDP, people create their own goods for personal use, little or no technology Developed Nations- high GDP, high level technology, much interchange between businesses, people do not raise their own food

Map of developing and developed nations Anything interesting about the locations of each of these?

Governments Representative Democracy- reps. are chosen from among the people to create laws Monarchy- ruling family who controls the government (Example- King or Queen) Oligarchy- small group of people control the govt. because of family, wealth, or military status Dictatorship- one person has complete control over the government Communism- government has all the power including control of the government
