Math: Place Value: Hundredths to One Million Multiplication strategies Division Strategies Decimals Fraction Data Geometry

Writer’s Workshop Lucy Calkins Six + 1 Traits of Writing Ideas -Word Choice Organization -Sentence Fluency Voice -Conventions Presentation

Reading Workshop: Guided Reading: Literature Circles: Small group reading that is differentiated based upon readiness and interests. Literature Circles: Individual jobs students have within a group for an agenda to emphasize one specific element of a story. Comprehension Strategies: Connecting, Visualizing, Determining Importance, and Inferencing

Language & Word Study: Mountain Language: Root Word Quizzes: Reinforces elements of language/grammar on a daily basis. Root Word Quizzes: Students will be given a word list on Monday and assessed the following Friday. Words Their Way: Spelling workbook Reinforces skills and patterns to build a larger vocabulary.

Behavior System: Weekly Report: Positive Discipline Approach: If a child has a concern in the areas of academic or behavior, his or her Friday folder will be marked and a comment will be listed on the opposite side of the chart. Positive Discipline Approach: We discuss problems and solutions during daily classroom meetings. Students are allowed to earn individual and team rewards.

Adjusting to 4th Grade: Fourth grade can be a big adjustment for students. Please encourage and model personal responsibility. Your child should be completing homework independently each night. Twenty minutes of reading EVERY night. Math homework will be given most nights. Please make sure your child studies for his or her spelling test and root quiz through out the week.

Adjusting to 4th Grade Continued: Students are required to keep up with daily class work, homework, and projects in class and at home. Binders should remain organized (papers should be in correct subject areas). Your child is responsible for writing assignments in the agenda. Each assignment is written on the classroom agenda. Tests are written with at LEAST three days in advance.

Grading Scale: A: 90 to 100 B: 80 to 89 C: 74 to 79 D: 70 to 73 F: Below 70 Progress reports will be sent home at the 4 ½ weeks mark.

Absences All absences require a written note signed by a parent. Our instructional time begins at 7:50. Please make every effort to have your child to school on time. When absent, students will be given a packet of work missed. Please return by the date indicated with a parent signature.

Snack, Birthdays & Lunch Please send your child with a “nutritious” snack daily and bottled water (No candy, please.) Birthday snacks may be sent in with your child or left in the office in the morning. Please make sure all birthday treats are precut and ready to serve.

Transportation Please send a note on the day your child’s transportation will be changed. Students are required to be sent home the “usual” way unless I have a written note. In rare cases, please fax the office or call for emergencies. Please do not send an E-mail.
