Facts about history of hippies The hippie movement began in California. Most of those in the movement were young, between the ages of 15 and 25. The early hippies created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and some used drugs such as cannabis, LSD and magic mushrooms.
