doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 2 Abstract This document suggests modifications to the 60 GHz PAR in vht-proposal-for-60ghz-vht-par.doc to address study group comments. Minor modifications described for the 5 C’s in vht-proposal-for-60ghz-vht-5c.doc.

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 3 Discussion Points on 60 GHz and 08/223 Should VHT create an amendment to or new standard (i.e ) for 60 GHz? –What changes to MAC are required? Usage models No mention of range in the PAR proposal What level of coexistence with c? In what way does 60 GHz VHT have distinct identity from c?

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 4 Amendment vs Standard Opinions voiced that continued amending of is becoming unmanageable especially with a major modification There was discussion suggesting that significant changes to the lower MAC may be required for 60 GHz January 2008 strawpoll: for 57-62GHz, amendment or new standard: –Amendment: 11 –New standard: 29 We need to maintain and enhance the ecosystem –Reuse and maintain backward compatibility to management plane E.g. association, authentication, security, measurement, MIB

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 5 60 GHz Usage Models WFA usages in 07/2988 –Desktop storage and display –Video streaming –Sync and Go –Wireless networking for small office –backhaul Several 60 GHz usages were presented in 07/2587 –High speed cable replacement (HDMI, monitor) –Wireless docking –Sync and Go –Wireless LAN Many of these are identical to typical PAN applications Strawpoll in Jan 2008 –Should the study group specify limited usage models in a <6 GHz PAR and a 60 GHz PAR? Y/N/A: 39/1/19 To limit usage models and differentiate from c, VHT should focus purpose on core of which is data networking

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 8 Coexistence with c Text from c PAR, additional explanatory notes “It is in the best interest of users and the industry to strive for a level of coexistence with other wireless systems, especially those in similar market spaces. Coexistence requirements will be established in the Task Group selection criteria against which the proposals will be evaluated.” –Agreed Specifically, in scope and “additional comments” we can state that VHT will investigate coexistence with other 60 GHz systems Furthermore we can set up liaison to c and jointly work on mutual coexistence

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 9 Summary on Distinct Identity Usage model –Differentiate from PAN applications of video cable replacement, kiosk sync-and-go –Emphasize typical applications like network connectivity and file transfer between devices Capacity enhancement of wireless networking infrastructure Reuse and maintain backward compatibility to management plane Retain the fundamentals including network architecture Fast session transfer between 60 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz bands

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 11 Modified 2.1 Title of Standard: IEEE Standard for Information Technology - Telecommunications and information exchange between systems - Local and metropolitan area networks - Specific requirements - Part 11.3: Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications for Very High Throughput. Title from 08/223r1 –Draft Amendment to STANDARD [FOR] Information Technology- Telecommunications and information exchange between systems- Local and Metropolitan networks-Specific requirements-Part 11: Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications: Enhancements for Very High Throughput

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 12 Modified 5.2 Scope The scope of this project is to define a new standard in for a Physical Layer (PHY) and Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically GHz) which will be capable of very high throughput. The MAC and PHY specified in this standard: –Enable a maximum throughput of at least 1 Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) –Retain the fundamentals including network architecture (e.g. BSS, ESS) –Maintain interoperability with the management plane (e.g. association, authentication, security, roaming, network measurement and management, MIB) –Enable fast session transfer between 60 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz bands –Address coexistence with other systems in the band Scope from 08/223r1 –The scope of this project is to define an amendment that will standardize modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically GHz) which will be capable of very high throughput, with a maximum throughput of at least 1Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP). This VHT amendment will be capable of recognizing and allocating dedicated VHT channels which are compatible with the IEEE c amendment.

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 13 Modified 5.4 Purpose The purpose of the project is to improve the wireless local area network (LAN) user experience by providing significantly higher throughput for data networking. Purpose from 08/223r1 –The purpose of the project is to improve the wireless local area network (LAN) user experience by providing significantly higher throughput for current applications and to enable new applications and market segments. This shall be done by maintaining backwards compatibility to previous standards maintaining the user experience of , for example, i/w for security, k/v etc. for management etc.

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 14 New 5.5 Need for Project As WLAN usage grows, there exists an increasing need for additional capacity. Additional high bandwidth channels are needed for efficient support of high throughput usage. Mainstream wired LAN products have shifted to Gigabit per second speeds. WLAN technology must advance to provide a comparable throughput.

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 15 New 7.4 Additional Comments 5.2) –Fast session transfer between 60 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz bands will enable typical WLAN coverage for multi-band devices. However, this does not imply that devices must be multi-band. The standard will specify a mechanism for multi-band devices. –It is in the best interest of users and the industry to strive for a level of coexistence between wireless systems. VHT will investigate coexistence with other systems in the band.

doc.: IEEE /0498r0 Submission April 2008 Eldad Perahia, Intel CorporationSlide 16 Modified Compatibility Compatibility with IEEE 802 requirements will result from keeping the MAC SAP interface the same as for the existing standard. The proposed standard shall introduce no architectural changes. The MAC SAP definition shall not be altered, ensuring that all LLC and MAC interfaces are compatible to and in conformance with the IEEE Architecture, Management and Internetworking standards. New managed objects shall be defined as necessary in a format and structure consistent with existing managed objects. Compatibility from 08/224r0 –Compatibility with IEEE 802 requirements will result from keeping the MAC SAP interface the same as for the existing standard.
