The Interior Plains

The Interior Plains The Interior Plains is the second-largest landmass region in Canada(1.8 Million sq/km). It covers parts of Manitoba, Sask., Alberta, B.C., Yukon, and Northwest Territories.

The Interior Plains As erosion wore away the rocks of the Canadian Shield, the rock particles were carried westward by the movement of rivers, streams, and ice. These rock particles were then deposited in the Interior Plains. As erosion continued, many layers of sediment were deposited on each other.

The Interior Plains Over Millions of years, these sediments were transformed into sedimentary rock. As well, these rock layers contain valuable mineral resources.

Climate of The Interior Plains Summers are usually hot, though the growing season is relatively short, due to the danger of early frosts. Winters are cold. Also, the climate of The Plains is very dry, with an average of 30 cm precipitation per year.

Other Farming is a vital industry in The Plains, with wheat and canola being the two main crops. Also, this region contains many of Canada’s oil and gas fields.
