The Revolution Moves from Moderate to Radical I can analyze secondary sources in order to develop my understandings of the events of the French Revolution during the Radical Stage

The Declaration O The National Assembly passes “The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen” O One of the most important gov’t documents in the history of the world O What do you think it might have been inspired by? O Predict: What will be some of the rights it discusses?

Directions O Your table will be assigned 2 of the listed rights O You will summarize it in your own words on the right side of the paper O Then you will present your summary to the class

The National Assembly O Passes the Declaration of the Rights of Man O Liberty, property, security, freedom of speech, freedom of religion O “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” O Also reformed the church O Took over church lands O Priests to be elected O Gave France $$ O This upset peasants – they thought the church should be controlled by the pope

Louis tries to escape O By 1791 – National Assembly had taken the king’s power O Rumors that the royal family’s lives could be in danger O Royals try to escape to Austrian Netherlands O Caught near the border and returned to Paris

A New Government O In 1791 the National Assembly finally completes a new constitution O Louis reluctantly approves it O A new legislative body is created: the Legislative Assembly O LA has the ability to create laws as well as to declare war O Louis still gets to enforce the laws O France is now a Constitutional Monarchy

The rest of Europe gets nervous… O Other monarchs in Europe were concerned about what was going on in France O The Prussians and Austrians openly supported the restoration of Louis to the crown

Legislative Assembly takes action O France’s Legislative Assembly declares war in 1792 O France now at war with Prussia & Austria

The King O Prussian army advances toward Paris O Prussians threaten to destroy Paris if king is not returned to the throne O Tactic backfires – a mob invades the royal palace and imprisons Louis, Marie and the kiddies

Troops and Citizens O French troops focus on fighting off Prussians O Paris is left in the hands of its citizens O There are some 1,000 supporters of the king who are imprisoned in Paris O Rumors circulate that these supporters are going to break out and take control

Not a good day to be a royalist O In September 1792, citizens raid the prisons and slaughter over 1,000 prisoners O Royalists, priests and nobles are among those victimized

Another new government O Legislative Assembly under pressure O Depose the king O Dissolved the Assembly O Called for a new government O National Convention O The new government O All men get right to vote

Louis O Tried as a citizen O Sentenced to death O Beheaded

Robespierre comes to power O The National Convention established an executive branch called the Committee for Public Safety O Robespierre eventually emerges as the leader of the committee O Robespierre’s role becomes that of a dictator

Reign of Terror O His committee goes after anyone who disagrees O This era becomes known as the Reign of Terror O Thousands are tried and executed O Even supporters of the Revolution were sometimes victims if they didn’t support Robespierre’s radical policies

Reign of Terror O Even leaders like Danton are led to the guillotine O Marie Antoinette also killed O Estimates are that up to 40,000 may have been executed

Reasons for Execution O Source: The Execution Record, 1793 O Jean-Baptiste Henry, 18, tailor: O Convicted of having cut down a tree of liberty. O Marie Plaisant, seamstress O Convicted of having said that she was an aristocrat and that she did not care for the nation. O Henriette Francoise Marboeuf, 55 O Convicted of having hoped for the arrival of the Austrians and Prussians and of keeping food for them.

O Francois Bertrand, 37, publican O Convicted of having provided the defenders of the country with sour wine. O Jean Julien, wagoner O Having been sentenced to 12 years hard labor, took it into his head to cry “long live the king”, brought back to the tribunal and condemned to death. O Terror at Bordeaux: O “A woman was charged with the crime of having wept at her husband’s execution…she was condemned to sit for hours under the blade which shed upon her, drop by drop, the blood of her dead husband…before she was released by death…”

Think-Pair-Share O How do the events of the reign of terror display ‘mob mentality’? O How does the hysteria and fear during the Reign of Terror compare/contrast to the fear and hysteria during the witch hunts in Europe?

Max meets his maker O Finally by 1794, members of the National Convention rise up against Robespierre O After a failed suicide attempt, Robespierre is arrested and executed O Reign of Terror is over

Third time the charm? O In 1795, yet another government is formed, the third since 1789 O Led by upper middle class O Calls for a two-house legislature O Five-person executive branch known as the Directory O This government is able to establish some semblance of order to France

Textbook Worksheet O Work with someone at your table or work individually O Yes you may listen to music as you work individually

Documentary O Finish!
