Internet Sources Perkins County Schools 5th Grade NETA 2012 Objective: To find and verify internet sources that are reliable. Perkins County Schools 5th Grade NETA 2012 Objective: To find and verify internet sources that are reliable.

Objectives: To use keywords and search engines on the Internet To use information in the URL To verify an Internet site as useful and reliable

Keywords: Type the search word or keyword into the search engine box. Use 2 or more keywords to narrow down your search. Keywords are in bold or darker print in the list of sites found.

Evaluating Sources: Since anyone can write a website, not all sites have information you can count on. It’s even possible that some sites have incorrect information. You’ll have to pick the best, most reliable, and useful sites for your search.

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions What is the purpose of the site? Do they want to sell you something, join their organization, entertain, o r inform you?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions Does the title of the site relate to the topic you are researching?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions When was the site created? Is it up-to-date?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions Who created the site? Does the URL have:.com.gov.edu.org The URL endings give a clue as to who created it.

Note that.com,.net, and.org sites can be purchased by anyone and are the least reliable. Websites with.gov,.edu, and.mil have to be applied for and their use is controlled. Evaluating Sources:Ask Questions

Is there a link to a page describing what company or organization is responsible for the information on this page?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions Can I easily figure out who wrote the information?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions Is the author, company, or organization’s qualifications stated somewhere on the site?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions What is the tone of the website? Does it seem realistic?

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions Is the website useful? Does it have the information I need? Some sites are reliable, but not useful for your purpose.

Evaluating Sources: Ask Questions Can I find or verify the same information on other web sites?
