Safety First!!!

General Computer Safety Handle components and cards with care. Ask a parent for help if a piece breaks. (such as a CD). A broken part could cut you. It is best not to operate your computer in extreme thunderstorms. Do not drink or have an open container near your computer. Be cautious of your computer overheating, if it seems to be getting to hot, then turn it off for a while. Be careful to not plug in to many electronics to the same outlets. This could cause a fire.

Internet Search Engine Safety When using a search engine on the internet, make sure you are using a reliable one, such as Google, Yahoo, AOL, Ask.com, or Galileo. Never just click the first response. Read through the synopsizes, check the given URL’s, and make sure the site isn’t a fraud before you open it. When searching, be careful of your word choice. If you find or see anything inappropriate while searching notify an adult immediately so that the webpage may be blocked.

Social Networking Safety Never reveal your location. When making “status updates” be careful to reveal where you are and where you are going, then someone would know you are not at home and that your house is empty. NEVER give anyone your personal information. People are not always who they say they are. If you notice anything or anyone suspicious then report it to an adult IMMEDIATELY. Do not accept anyone as a friend that you do not know. Setting your profile on private does not mean that you are hidden from view, so continue to monitor your every move!

Information Safety Never trust everything you read. Make sure your information is coming from a credible source. Never just “copy and paste” without giving credit to the source. Taking someone’s work or pictures without giving credit is a copyright violation referred to as plagiarism. This could result in very serious consequences. Sites like wikipedia and yahoo answers are not credible sources. Anyone can create those pages, and the information is not always accurate.

Things to Remember: I think Chatdanger.com does one of the best jobs of putting internet safety and online chatting into “Smart”, easy to understand terms. S afe Keep a secret password and give your number to very few people. M eeting some one online can put you in extreme danger! A ccepting Never accept information ( s, texts, pictures) from someone you do not know. R eliable People online can lie at anytime T ell your parent if you become concerned!
