Writing Process Day 4: 4 Square Introduction and Conclusion

Introduction Your 1 st box is the Introduction box. It contains the following: –Hook –Topic Sentence –Summary of Details –Feeling Sentence

Hook To grab your readers attention, one strategy is the write a “hook” at the beginning of the essay. An easy way to write a “hook” is to change the prompt into a question. Let’s look at some examples on the next slide.

“Hook” examples Write a story about your best birthday. –Hook example: What was your best birthday? Describe your favorite season. –Hook example: What is your favorite season?

Topic Sentence: In one sentence, summarize your essay. This sentence is your main idea. If you answer your “hook” question in a complete sentence, you will have a topic sentence. Let’s look at the next slide for examples.

Topic Sentence examples Write a story about your best birthday –Hook example: What was your best birthday? –Topic Sentence: My best birthday was my tenth birthday. Describe your favorite season. –Hook example: What is your favorite season? –Topic Sentence: My favorite season is winter.

Summary of Details After you write your topic sentence, you will write one sentence to summarize your two main details. Look at your green and yellow boxes. What were your two main details. Combine these two details into one sentence. Let’s look at the example on the next slide.

Summary of Details Example: Detail #1: To begin with, I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping in a nearby tree. Detail #2: Then, my mom surprised me with breakfast in bed! Summary of Details Sentence: I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping in a nearby tree followed by breakfast in bed!

Feeling Sentence: Use feeling words to describe how you felt. Examples: happy, excited, sad, disappointed, mad, anxious, frustrated, grateful, worried, upset, helpful, angry, aggravated, proud Let’s look at the next slide.

Example of Feeling Sentence I felt as excited as a young child on Christmas morning.

Conclusion Your last box is the Conclusion box. It contains the following: –Topic Sentence –Summary of Details –Feeling Sentence –Hook Question **Did you notice how it is the same as the Introduction box?

Conclusion You will write the same ideas from your Introduction box. The only difference is that you will rewrite the sentences to make them different. Let’s look at the next slide for examples.

Conclusion Example Introduction: What was your best birthday? My best birthday was my tenth birthday. I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping in a nearby tree followed by breakfast in bed! I felt as excited as a young child on Christmas morning. Conclusion: My tenth birthday was my favorite birthday. Chirping birds woke me up and then I ate a scrumptious breakfast. I was extremely grateful to have such a wonderful birthday. What did you do for your best birthday?
