Presentation transcript:

Is it possible that the continents were actually together sometime in the past? Continental Drift Theory

Alfred Wegener’s Theory of Continental Drift Theory that continents can drift apart from one another and have done so in the past. Reasons for theory: –The continents seem to fit together like puzzle pieces. –Fossils of the same plant and animal species are found on several continents across oceans. –Glacier grooves match theoretical placement.

Fossil Findings of Mesosaurus and Glossopteris

Sea-Floor Spreading Takes place at Mid-ocean ridges (Mountains in the middle of the ocean)

New Oceanic Lithosphere is Created

Magnetic Reversals blah

Possible Causes of Plate Motion Blah

Tectonic Plate Boundaries Convergent, Divergent, & Transform

Tracking Tectonic Plate Motion Scientists use a network of satellites called the Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure the rate of tectonic plate movement.
