Continental Drift Hypothesis proposed by Alfred Wegener in early 1900’s Said that continents had once been part of a single large land mass called Pangaea This landmass broke apart and the continents drifted to their present locations

Wegener’s Evidence Fossils of same plant and animal species found on opposite sides of ocean Rock evidence of the same ancient climatic conditions were found on several continents Continents seemed to fit together like pieces of a puzzle

Problem with Wegener’s hypothesis No way to explain how continents actually moved. Science discredited Wegener and his theory. Most scientists thought it was impossible to move huge masses of land
