Harambee means "all pull together" in Swahili.

Let us take care of the children for they have a long way to go. Let us take care of the elders, for they have come a long way Let us take care of those in between for they are doing the work.

Harambee events have long been important in parts of East Africa as ways to build and maintain communities. The Tucson Unified School District’s African American Student Services Department introduces the spirit of Harambee to students, educators and community members with an array of arts, music, dance, poetry and storytelling.

Art, music, dance and rich oral traditions are just a few of the gifts our African Ancestors gave us. We hold onto these gifts and use them to spread the message of unity at this year’s Harambee Festival.

Take a moment to think about the gifts you bring to your community. How do you feel when you share your gifts? How do you think it makes others feel when you share your gifts?

The idea of pulling together helps us realize that we all have something to give and something to receive. Think about the people who have shared their gifts and talents with you. How did it make you feel when they shared? What did you gain from that person or those people?

1.There is a rich, fertile legacy of folklore from Africa. 2. Folktales prepare young people for life, as there are many lessons to be learned from the tales. 3.In the African folktales, the stories reflect the culture where animals abound; consequently, the monkey, elephant, giraffe, lion, zebra, crocodile, and rhinoceros appear frequently along with a wide variety of birds such as the ostrich, the secretary bird, and the eagle. 4.Through their behavior, many valuable lessons are learned.
