2 nd – 6 th Rockstars February Weekly Reminders 4th Grade Literacy – In Literacy class students will continue to learn comprehension skills and strategies to become better readers. This week students will learn and understand poetry and prose. There are several elements of poetry that are based upon prior reading strategies. 5th Grade Literacy - In Literacy class students will build upon their prior knowledge of comprehension skills and strategies to become better readers. This week students will be able to draw a conclusion (infer) about the characters and setting of a story. We are also continuing to work on multiplication, division, and problem-solving. 3rd Grade Math - My 3rd grade math class will be using related multiplication facts to divide. They will also be dividing a 1-digit or a 2-digit number with or without regrouping as well as problem- solving. Please continue to work on multiplication facts as well as Compass Learning if you have internet access. :) 2nd Grade Social Studies - My 2nd grade class will be studying about immigration and citizenship. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd grade class will be having lots of fun studying about the life of the Vikings. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will be studying about the Civil War and the life of a soldier during this war. 2nd Grade Literacy I can draw conclusions based upon my background knowledge and clues from the text. I can recognize that having background knowledge helps improve my comprehension. I can develop vocabulary to use when reading, writing, and speaking. 3rd Grade Literacy I can identify and use graphic sources to improve my comprehension when reading. I can recognize important ideas and understand that they are essential facts that are found in nonfiction selections. I can develop vocabulary to use when reading, writing, and speaking. 2nd Grade Science I can describe how the same kinds of plants can be different. I can explain how crowding changes the way plants grow. 3rd Grade Science I can explain how a variety of simple machines work. I can describe how simple machines help us do work.
Bowen Math/Science We are working on word problems and developing strategies to help us break them apart and understand what operation of math we are being ask to perform. Language Students in grades 2-4 are writing persuasive letters. Each level is to a different degree. Please ask your child what the parts of a friendly letter are and have then act out our little demonstration to help them remember. Math - We have wrapped up our unit over fractions and begin learning about decimals. Continue to work on multiplication facts daily. Science - We have finished up our unit over Rocks and Minerals. We are learning about the solar system this week, specifically the sun and moon. Writer's Workshop 5th grade will begin our Opinion Writing Piece. 6th grade will start an Argument Paper. We look forward to the new concepts we will learn. Daily Five The topic of the week is Generalization. Ask your child daily, "what does generalization mean?" We have finished our book/video study of "The Miracle Worker". Looking forward to great things in reading. Rock On!!!! Linder Social Studies I can explain key powers of the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branch. I can explain "Checks and Balances" of the Constitution. I can interpret the preamble of the Constitution. 5th grade Math I can multiply tenths and hundredths by a 1-digit whole number. I can multiply tenths and hundredths by multiples of 10. I can divide tenths and hundredths by a 1-digit whole number. I can round quotients to the nearest tenth or hundredth. The next few weeks we will be focusing on the coordinate plane. We will plot coordinates and graph linear lines. We will also include area and perimeter of polygons that we plot.
