Plants are PRODUCERS and everything else consumes they energy that they produce making them CONSUMERS. Food chains and webs are separated out into TROPHIC LEVELS.

Usually a maximum of 10% is passed from one trophic level to another. Decomposers are placed on the primary consumer level even though they take their nutrition from several trophic levels.
