1. Bad Contract Terms and Conditions

Participate in the contract definition Know where to look

2. Scope Management Errors

Understand the nature of this point Verify Requirements and Budget Design to the Requirements and Budgets Build the Design Accurate price and negotiate for scope changes [a strong change control process] when necessary

3. Bad Estimating

Get it right the 1 st time – Best people do the best estimating – Use your experience – Use standard estimates not something just invented for the job – Have adequate contingency

4. Contingency Not Controlled

CONTORLL CONTINGENCY YOURSELF – Don’t Share it with team leaders – Don’t Plan it in the work tasks – Have your People admit mistakes to earn the use of contingency, don’t just give it away.

5. Understand: People will make mistakes

OK, but demand that it only happen Once!

6. People Burn too

Be human in the demands that you place on your people. Take care of your supper stars Control Overtime – my rule was that there was no overtime allowed. Then I made exceptions

7. People will hide problems

Go get what you need!

9. Poor Acceptance Procedures

The “rules” for acceptance must be in the contract and they must be fair and balanced. Execute the rules for Acceptance Procedures Use change control procedures where the client needs more than the rules provide

10. You Cannot be a Jerk

Be fair Maintain high ethical standards Use good Judgment Make exceptions when appropriate Your people and your clients need to like you
