Ch. 18 Developing a Design Plan Objectives: Identify the first five steps in developing a design plan Analyze the importance of learning about client’s characteristics Describe factors to examine when taking an inventory of an existing environment Complete a scale drawing of a room and it’s furnishings Explain how to develop a preliminary budget Evaluate the importance of having a design resource file

Good Design Requires Planning What are you starting with? What is the budget? Where will you shop?

Steps in a Design Plan 1. Identify the project 2. Assess client characterisitics 3. Analyze the environment 4. Develop a preliminary budget 5. Compile a design resource file 6. Plan use of space 7. Choose a style and color scheme 8. Select backgrounds, furniture, lighting, and accessories 9. Present the design 10. Modify and implement the design

Step 1: Identify the Project What goals does the person occupying the space have for the room? What is envisioned for the new space? What time frame are you under? Be realistic What is the budget allowed for the project? Determines if all goals can be met

Step 2: Assess Client Characteristics Habits? Likes? Dislikes? Needs? Wants? Written questionarre/take notes from meeting Family inventory (lifestyle, expectations, entertaining preferences, preferred atmosphere, etc.)

Step 3: Analyze the Environment Environment Inventory Number of rooms and placement Activity zones Storage areas Furniture/accessories Condition of backgrounds Electrical and wiring Safety Traffic flow Take measurements (make templates for space plan)

Step 4: Develop a Preliminary Budget Physical needs for project Service fees Contingency fee Calculate cost of materials

Step 5: Compile a Design Resource File Photos client has saved Before photos of space to be designed Find sources for ideas Decorating magazines Furniture/accessory catalogs Websites Newspapers How-to/Reference books Present to person who will occupy space for likes/dislikes to be determined
