Chemical Bonding Design Lab

Your Laptop Would you let me smash it?

Why not?

How much does it cost?

What is it made of?

Shouldn’t it be sturdy if it’s so expensive?

What substance would you use to replace the casing?

Video: Making Stuff Stronger

Discussion Why is it necessary to find a replacement for steel? What available materials would be a good replacement for steel?

Two words: Elasticity Tensile Strength Why are they so important?

Thought Experiment Get into five groups of 3. I WILL SORT YOU. Design an investigation to test the durability of cotton thread, kevlar thread, and nylon thread. You are not actually DOING anything; you are creating the procedure of a THEORETICAL experiment.

Questions to Consider: What would you do and how would you do it? What are your variables? What materials would you need? What kind of data should you collect? How do you analyze your results? How do you determine the validity of your results?

Be sure to keep up with what you are doing. Work together. You will have to complete the design lab report for homework. It is due on Wednesday.
