About energypedia 2 Wiki* platform on the Internet Offering free access to expert information On renewable energy and energy efficiency in developing countries Everyone can read, write, edit, and disseminate articles on energypedia * Wiki = Software for web sites allowing users not only to read but also to directly edit its content online.

Internal project wiki Developed within the Dutch-German energy partnership Energising Development (EnDev), implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as internal tool for knowledge and project management. energypedia was born EnDev wiki was re-launched as a separate workspace under the now known name "energypedia". From there on energypedia can be read and edited by registered users. Public launch of energypedia Energypedia becomes public. Energypedia can be read by unregistered users and its contents can be found via internet research. energypedia becomes independent Founded as not-for-profit organization, independent from GIZ. Starts working in own office in April Today, energypedia counts more than 790 articles and 2,290 users worldwide About energypedia today

4 Key facts * > 790 articles > 2,300 registered users every 5 th user is from Africa every 7 th user is from Asia GIZ projects, energy experts, students, consultants up to 15,000 unique visitors per month *March 2013 About energypedia

Being a living platform of knowledge on renewable energies and energy efficiency with regard to development cooperation. By providing the opportunity to share knowledge, experience and lessons learnt with everyone, energypedia helps to improve energy access all around the world. 5 About energypedia

Our Vision world of free knowledge exchange and mutual learning on renewable energies sustainable energy access for all. 6 About energypedia Our Mission become a living platform on renewable energies offering relevant information and user-friendly knowledge sharing tools

Users ≠ passive consumers Users create, edit and disseminate content Direct user interaction Famous applications: Social networking sites (e.g. Facebook) File sharing sites (e.g. YouTube, Flickr) Wikis (e.g. Wikipedia) Successful because all users can contribute 7 How energypedia works

“Knowledge is power” ►less and less true in a world of widespread, inexpensive communications ►knowledge spreads too quickly to hold power for long ►rapid innovation makes “old” knowledge quickly obsolete “Knowledge sharing is power” ►exchange fosters development, improvement and innovation Wiki is (only) a knowledge sharing tool – it won’t solve old knowledge management problems Knowledge sharing is power 8

9 energypedia ►connects content collecting & storing knowledge publishing knowledge accessing knowledge How energypedia works

energypedia ►connects content collecting & storing knowledge publishing knowledge accessing knowledge ►connects people groups discussions 10 How energypedia works

11 energypedia ►connects content collecting & storing knowledge publishing knowledge accessing knowledge ►connects people groups discussions ►connects content with people (knowledge communities) How energypedia works

Creating content is absolutely easy 12

►People like to share knowledge More than 80% of all web users who create content, stated “Joy of sharing with others on interesting topics” as a reason for participation* *(IBM/ZEM Study “Innovation in den Medien 2008”) ►People need the right audience Context: People need to know who needs one’s knowledge for what Motivation: positive feedback from others is important -> promotes our status as experts ►People only share voluntarily, no one can ever be forced Why do people share? 13

Challenges of web-based knowledge transfer 14 Creating the right context / audience rather same interests than same disciplines Encouraging feedback / communication offering user-friendly tools (messaging, discussions, groups, evaluation) Increasing the community reaching the critical mass via public relations ( rule) Ensuring quality quality standards, wiki gardening, quality weeks, encouraging users Financing measures fundraising & affiliated consultancy firm Measuring impacts / success

Opportunities of web-based knowledge transfer 15 Accessibility from almost everywhere (increasing Internet distribution) Cross-border and interdisciplinary connecting people and experiences all around the world Transparent who writes what Efficient one document version; less s; linking to information instead of producing it again and again; search functions; databases Easy-to-use and up-to-date information can easily be updated by everyone

Wiki offers great opportunities but also faces challenges Success requires the right cultural, technological and organizational conditions Wiki is only a knowledge sharing tool Goal is free knowledge on renewable energies to accelerate their distribution and to reduce energy poverty We need a cultural change from “Which information shall we make accessible” to “Which information has to be secured?” Conclusion 16
