Identify the different types of government and how they are different.

 Essential Question  How do we define the different types of governments?

  Who rules?  How do they acquire their power?  How long do they serve?

  leaders are usually elected by the people  Citizens who are eligible to vote have a say in how the government works.  People are the source of government power Democracy

  Direct Democracy  People directly make the laws and run the government  Ancient Greece had a directly democracy  Might not work well in a big country  Representative Democracy  People elect representatives to make laws and run the government  Also called a republic  Rome was one of the first republics Types of Democracy

 Republic  a country that has no monarch  The head of the country is usually an elected president.

 Totalitarian  country with only one political party  People are forced to do what the government tells them and may also be prevented from leaving the country.

  oldest form of government  leader is determined through family lines  leader is in this position for life  Often, a monarchy will include a dynasty, a powerful group or family that maintains its power and position over many generations Monarchy

  Constitutional Monarchy  monarch as head of state--one who represents the people as a traditional symbol of the country AND  elected officials as head of government--those who make laws and official decisions for the country Combination Governments: Democracy + Monarchy

  a single leader has absolute control and unrestricted power  Takes power by force  leader may use force to control the population Dictatorships

  Communism  the government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country  historically involved the violent overthrow of capitalism (when businesses are owned by individuals instead of the government)  Often take away human rights Common Type of Dictatorship/Autocracy

 Anarchy  no government  can happen after a civil war in a country, when a government has been destroyed and rival groups are fighting to take its place  Anarchists are people who believe that government is a bad thing in that it stops people organizing their own lives.

  When a nation recognizes a god or a deity as their ruler and the king or leader as that god’s representative  The country’s constitution is based on their religious text Theocracy

  Each group will create a presentation that promotes their product(type of government) to the investors using Animoto  The government that has the most investors by the end of the activity wins. In other words, your presentation needs to promote your government as the best type.  Students will not be graded on how many investors they have. However, the groups will be graded on the presentation, material in the presentation, and professionalism.  There will be two types of groups; Presenters and Investors.
