Before you start balancing the equation be sure it isn’t one of the diatomic molecules, which means it can’t be by itself it must have two. If one these seven are by themselves you must put a subscript of two. The seven diatomic molecules are : N 2, O 2, F 2, Cl 2, Br 2, H 2, and I 2.

First to balance an equation you must do an atom inventory to see what you need to balance: HCl + Al(OH) 3 → AlCl 3 + H 2 O 4 = H = 2 1 = Cl = 3 1 = Al = 1 3 = O = 1

` You want to be equal on both sides so for this equation you can start with the oxygen making the product side have 3 oxygen's so it is equal to the reactants side of 3. Putting the 3 in front of the H 2 O makes the hydrogen have 6. HCl + Al(OH) 3 → AlCl 3 + 3H 2 0 4=H=2 6 reactant side 1=Cl=3 product side 1=Al=1 3=O=1 3

The 3H 2 O made hydrogen have 6, so the reactant side also needs 6. I put a 3 in front of the HCl to have a total of 6 (the other 3 comes from the Al(OH)3).The 3 in front of the HCl also makes Cl have 3, so now you have the Cl balanced. And the Al is already balanced. 3HCl + Al(OH) 3 → AlCl 3 + 3H 2 O 6 4=H= =Cl=3 1=Al=1 3=O=3

Be sure that everything is equal. And your equation is balanced and you’re done !
