Marriage survival Who’s In Charge? Marriage Under Attack Marriage Under Attack Institutional Trends Between 1950 and 2011, according to University of Maryland sociologist Philip Cohen, the marriage rate fell from 90 marriages a year per 1,000 unmarried women to just 31, a 66 percent decline. There has also been a dramatic increase in the proportion of women who are separated or divorced. In 1920, less than 1 percent of women held that distinction. Today, that number is 15 percent.
