2 nd Grade News December2011 Classroom Highlights: November Recap We entertained and honored families and community members at our annual Veteran’s Day Assembly. American Education Week was successful and lots of fun! Thank you for taking the time to join us. The students were thrilled to perform for you! Looking Ahead: December’s Learning Objectives MATH Students will continue to build their automatic recall ability of basic addition and subtraction facts SOL 2.6. Students will, given two numbers, whose sum is 99 or less, a) estimate the sum and/or difference and b) find the sum and/or difference using various methods of calculation (mental computation, concrete materials, and paper and pencil) SOLs 2.7, 2.8. SOCIAL STUDIES Students are learning about Native Americans: Eastern Woodland, Lakota Sioux and Pueblo Indians. Students will locate where they lived on a map, and compare their cultures and contributions to life as we live it today. SOL 2.2, 2.4. SCIENCE Students completed their investigation of Magnets. Through hands on investigations students examined natural and artificial magnets have certain characteristics and attract specific types of metals. SOL 2.2. LANGUAGE ARTS Use language structure to expand their vocabulary, with a focus on basic grammar rules SOL 2.6. Read with fluency and expression, reread and self-correct when necessary SOL 2.7. Identify the problem, solution and main idea. Describe characters, setting, and important events in fiction and poetry SOL 2.8. WRITING Maintain manuscript: write neatly, space words in a sentence, space sentences in writing SOL Write stories, letters and simple explanations SOL Teacher’s Corner Thank you for your continued support. December Birthdays Looking Ahead to 2012 and Beyond! Our students are working hard as we wind down 2011 and prepare for 2012! We are very proud of the educational and social growth of each child. We hope you are as well. Please continue to encourage your child to work hard and reinforce the importance of developing good work habits. Homework ALL homework is to be done in pencil unless the directions specifically say to use crayons. Homework should never be done in pen.
