OBJECTIVE I will understand what the A-G requirements are and understand why I need to complete them. I will create my own high school plan that displays how I will complete the A-G requirements.
ASCA STANDARDS Standard B : Students will complete school with academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college. A:B1 Improve Learning A:B1.5 Organize and apply academic information from a variety of sources A:B2 Plan to Achieve Goals A:B2.7 Identify post-secondary options consistent with interests, achievement, aptitude and abilities.
WHAT ARE “a-G” Subject Requirements? Specific courses that meet minimum admission requirements for the UC’s, CSU’s and other Institutions of Higher Education in California. They are different from high school graduation requirements! 15 Classes in total to be completed over 4 years. ONLY 15!!!! Students have to complete 26 classes for graduation at Orestimba High and colleges only require 15! Peer Share Review: What does “UC”, “CSU” and Institution of Higher Education mean? What does “minimum admission eligibility requirements” mean?
Why are they Called “A-G”? Each letter from “A-G” represents a different subject matter A-G courses have been specially approved by the University of California Office of the President If a course qualifies as an “A-G” course, it has been approved as a course that will prepare students for the rigor of college.

A-G REQUIREMENTS College Prep Elective Visual & Performing Art Language-Non English Lab Science Math (Math III) Math (Math II) Math (Math I) English 12 English 11 English 10 English 9 History/Social Science G : 1 College Preparatory Elective F : 1 Visual & Performing Art E : 2 Years of a Language Other than English (Same Language) 3 years recommended D : 2 Years of Lab Sciences (1 Biological and 1 Physical) 3 years recommended C : 3 Years of Math (Integrated Math I, II, & III) 4 years recommended B : 4 Years of English (1 year of approved ESL/EDL) A : 2 Years of History/Social Science (1 World History and 1 US History or 1 Semester US History & 1 Semester American Government)

Subject Requirement “A”: History/Social Science 2 Years of History/Social Science 1 year of a World History, Cultures, & Geography 1 Year of U.S. History OR 1 Semester U.S. History & 1 Semester American Government
Subject Requirement “B”: English 4 Years of English 1 year of English can be substituted for an approved ESL/ELD course
Subject Requirement “C”: Mathematics 3 years of Mathematics Algebra 1 Geometry Algebra 2 OR Integrated Math 1 Integrated Math 2 Integrated Math 3 4 years are RECOMMENDED Peer Share: What is the difference between a requirement and a recommendation? Why would 4 years be recommended?
Subject Requirement “D”: Laboratory Sciences 2 Years of Laboratory Sciences 1 Biological Science 1 Physical Science Chemistry or Physics 3 Years are recommended Peer share: Should everyone take a 3 rd year of Science?
Subject Requirement “e”: Language other than English 2 Years of a Language other than English Must be in the same language Ex: Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 NOT French 1 and Spanish 1 3 years are RECOMMENDED Peer Share: Why would a university want you to take an LOTE course?
Subject Requirement “F”: Visual & Performing Art One year long visual and performing art course Should be taken in sequential order
Subject Requirement “G”: College Preparatory elective 1 year of a college prep elective 1 year of an approved “G” course OR Any extra “A-F” approved course
How do I know if a course is “A-g” approved? Only specific courses are approved to meet college courses Every school has a list of approved courses UCOP Doorways Lists Orestimba High School’s Doorways List ALWAYS check to make sure your course meets the A-G requirements!
