About Us Our vision is to eradicate poverty housing worldwide We are motivated by our Christian faith We work by empowering local communities to solve their own housing problems We have enabled over 1.75 million people in 92 countries to have a safe, decent place to live Our aim is to help more than 50,000 earthquake affected families in Haiti over the next 5 years

Many areas of Haiti still lie under rubble. We have always said this will be a complex reconstruction situation because of the scale of devastation in a densely populated area.

With your support, Habitat for Humanity sent 21,000 Emergency Shelter Kits to Haiti.

The first Emergency Shelter Kits went to a community in Leogane. They were sleeping in tents, and so were a priority. …

…but most Kits were used to repair damaged homes, to enable occupants to move in again quickly ahead of the hurricane season.

We recruited and trained local professionals to assess such homes for safety homes have been assessed so far and will have been assessed by the end of 2010.

Local professionals are also employed to build our transitional shelters, or T-shelters. By next Summer, Habitat for Humanity will have helped to construct 125,000 T-shelters.

Our T-shelters have a strong permanent frame reinforced with cross bracing so the structure withstands hurricanes.

Ventilation is good, with mosquito nets included.

For families who don’t own land (e.g those who rented), the shelters are made with solid ground anchors.

Habitat for Humanity is lobbying the Haitian government for permanent land with proper land tenure for such families.

Once they have land, families will be able to move the entire shelter to a new site, where it will be given a permanent concrete foundation and the family can replace the tarp walls with more robust materials.

Such materials and construction services are being provided by local businesses and Habitat Resource Centres across Haiti.

Meet Philippe. Now he has somewhere better than a tent to live, he is able to go back to fishing and earning a living. Life is looking up for the first time in months.

Thank you for your support. Progress is being made, but there is a long way to go. The more funding we have, the more families we can help.

Our Haiti appeal is still open. If you would like to donate and help more families, please call , or visit our website at where you can donate securely online.
