Movie Special Effects Active Chemistry (Honor’s and 11 th period) You must bring your booklet and notebook to class EVERY DAY!

Your scene will contain: A script at least two special effects A procedure for how each special effect will be incorporated into your scene. A demonstration of your special effect, either in class or on film. A thorough explanation of the Chemistry behind your special effect Demonstrate the proper safety precautions throughout the investigation and presentation. Extra points can be gained by producing a short (1-3 minute movie), especially if it can be posted at schurzhs.org 25pts 25 each 50 each 50 pts TOTAL pts note: special effects do not have to arise from this chapter but must be cleared for safety precautions beforehand.

Turn to Activity 2 (page 12) To do part A, we will need a thermometer, ice, a heat source, and a data table. While two of your partners do part A, the other two will do part B. –Safety: Use caution around heat source and heated objects. Wear safety goggles. We will add an additional lab to the labs written in the book. –In a clear container containing a carbonate beverage, we will add some low density particles (raisins, paper puches, ….) observe the motion of the particles. – In your chemistry notebook, write your observations.

Activity 1: Elements and compounds Put on safety equipment, and set up the apparatus as described in steps 3 and 4, THEN Answer the questions on pages 4 -7 in your chemistry notebook as you follow the instructions. NOW you should be able to do step 5-8

Egg-splotion HCl (aq) + Zn (s)  ZnCl 2 (aq) + H 2 (g) Balance this in your notebook. 2 HCl + Zn  ZnCl 2 + H 2 (g)
