Population and Development: Data in Humanitarian settings UNFPA is committed to providing reliable population data for disaster preparedness, in the development of humanitarian response frameworks, transition and recovery plans. Acquiring reliable spatially defined demographic and socio-economic data, disaggregated sex, and age, is essential for effective humanitarian crisis mitigation, prevention, preparedness, humanitarian response and national reconstruction. Reliable and disaggregated data helps highlight the specific and differential impact of a crisis on the most vulnerable groups in the community.

Checklist : Key Data in emergencies activities □ Advocate for the incorporation of data collection into national emergency planning □ Strengthen national capacity to collect and use sex and age disaggregated data needed for appropriate responses to emergency situations, including on reproductive health needs, gender and gender based violence. □ Adapt/or develop standards, tools, guidelines, instruments and methodologies for data collection, analysis and management in emergencies, including rapid assessment tools and guides.

UNFPA’s Guidelines on Data Issues in Humanitarian Crisis Situations The Guidelines introduce approaches and proposed methodologies for data collection and management within the context of a humanitarian crisis resulting from natural disaster or conflict. They touch on the different possible data collection processes during humanitarian crisis situations and UNFPA’s current and potential role in terms of collaboration and developing partnerships with other UN entities, regional and other international partners, as well as national authorities and civil society.
