Discussion of Fazil,s proposals to changes in both the general logbook and H+N subspecialty logbook ULRIK AND ADRIAN

Fazil Apaydin, MD GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE EUROPEAN ACADEMY OF FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY. UEMS-ENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE EUROPEAN ACADEMY OF FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY PROFESSOR OF OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY, HEAD AND NECK SURGERY. EUROPEAN BOARD CERTIFIED FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON EGE UNIVERSITY, BORNOVA-IZMIR TURKEY

Discussion on the basis of a letter to the Board from Fazil (March 2014).  Add a new section VII to the general logbook: “Facial Plastic and Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery” ( example of the logbook attached in the letter).  Omit the “aesthetics” from section VI : Head and Neck and aesthetics.  The section of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery has omitted the Head and Neck from their logbook and would like the Head and Neck subspecialty to omit Facial Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery procedures from their logbook as much as possible. Some overlapping is inevitable

Fazil,s proposal for the general logbook.  I. Basic objectives  II. Otology  III. Nose and paranasal sinuses.  IV. Larynx. Tracheobronchial tree.  V.Oral cavity. Pharynx and oesophagus.  VI. Head and neck and aesthetics.  VII. Facial Plastic and Reconstructive and Aestetic Surgery

Answer from the President on behalf of the Board of the UEMS ORL Section(April 2014)  Generally we believe that it is controversial to take out reconstructive procedures from our education program and logbook.  Many facial plastic procedures will in many centers be performed by Head and Neck Surgeons, while more advanced procedures will be performed by Facial Plastic trained surgeons.  In many departments these procedures are carried out in a multidisciplinary setting.  As the H+N education program and logbook is just finalized and approved by EHNS,we would not at present change these 2 documents without a profound discussion among all UEMS delegates.

Discussion of a letter from Fazil (June 2014) In Belgium and in Austria many facial plastic procedures has been forbidden for ENT surgeons by law. To prevent this from happen in other European Countries Fazil emphasize the importance to implement the above mentioned changes to our main logbook ( New section VII) This proposal should strengthen the place of Facial Plastic Surgery within ENT H +N I have answered Fazil that I am personally positive to his proposal but the Board of our section can not give an official answer before a discussion among all UEMS delegates

Discussion  1. Should we have a new section VII in the general logbook as proposed by Fazil?  2. Should Facial Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic procedures be omitted from the Head and Neck Subspecialty logbook?
