Quick Introduction to NorduGrid Oxana Smirnova 4 th Nordic LHC Workshop November 23, 2001, Stockholm

Oxana Smirnova2 Aim: to create a Grid infrastructure in Nordic countries Triggered by needs of future particle physics experiments Collaboration with other sciences (e.g. biology, astronomy) Start: May 2001, end: October 2002 Part of the EU DataGrid Testbed NorduGrid

Oxana Smirnova3 Participants Copenhagen University: Niels Bohr Institute, Research Center COM, DIKU Oslo University, Bergen University Lund University, Uppsala University, Stockholm University, KTH Helsinki Institute of Physics

Oxana Smirnova4 Hardware Resources LundFront-end: PIII 1GHz 512MB RAM 40&60 GB disks Computing nodes: 2xDual PIII 1GHz 512MB RAM 30GB disks, 1 PIII 1GHz 256 MB RAM 16 GB disk UppsalaFront-end: PIII 866MHz 512MB RAM 40&60 GB disks Computing nodes: 2xDual PIII 866MHz 512MB RAM 40GB disks OsloFront-end: PIII 866MHz 128MB RAM 2x40 GB disks Computing nodes: PIII 1GHz & Dual PIII 1GHz, each 256MB RAM 40GB disks NBI, Bergen Clusters are being set up Helsinki, Stockholm Single nodes with Globus

Oxana Smirnova5 Software & Middleware OS: Linux (RedHat, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian) Resource manager: OpenPBS –Some sites plan upgrade to PBS Pro Grid middleware: Globus 2 DataGrid Testbed1 tools: to be released on December 11 (?)

Oxana Smirnova6 Enabled Grid Services Nordic Certification Authority –Run by NBI, Copenhagen –Issues Globus certificates for Nordic countries (NorduGrid, DKGRID, DataGrid) –Recognized by EU DataGrid (EDG) Virtual Organization for user management –Database server in Lund –should be recognized by EDG Information Service –Set up at NBI –Database of resources on a computational grid: current configuration, capabilities, and status NorduGrid Replica Catalog –Server in Oslo –Allows administration of distributed files over NorduGrid GridFTP –Servers at each site –Fast and reliable file transfer using Globus certificates for authentication

Oxana Smirnova7 Applications Existing middleware allows only simple executable file submission for a job –problems accessing and moving associated data –non-existing resource scheduling Temporary (non-scalable) solutions are developed; DataGrid tools release anticipated Attempts to run tasks: –Particle physics: remote submission tested (Lund, Oslo) –Biology: work in progress (Uppsala, Lyon) GridFTP evaluated for large file transfers

Oxana Smirnova8 Summary The underlying structure of a trans-Nordic computational grid is set up, with all the presently available services enabled Active working group: Web site, mailing lists, regular meetings Strong ties with EU DataGrid, participate in: –Testbed –Integration team –Applications (via ATLAS) NorduGrid is the only working distributed testbed within EDG Newcomers are welcomed!
