East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE A.Tauro

ALICE and T10 The ALICE Experiment is making extensive use of the CERN testbeam facilities In particular of T10 beamline: – Mostly ALICE dedicated – Ad hoc gas setup and detector infrastructures – Recently undergo services re-arrangement – Easy access T10 already fully booked for 2012! 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro 2

T services campaign Cabling (SPIE): removal existing cables and re-install them nicely Gas (PH-DT): improvement isobuthane and methane lines 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro Now

beam Threshold Cherenkov (electron veto) chamber X-Y motion table Gas radiator vessel Proto-2011 with gas radiator (June 2011)CCC-chambers for L0 and MIP tests (Aug 2011) 500x1000 mm 2 CCCs for L0 study CCCs for beam position (MIP) study First observation of Cherenkov-ring with C4F8O radiator gas (monitor-photo) A typical (and good) charge- distribution of the photon-clusters in the Cherenkov-ring G.Bencze 2011 VHMPID test setup in T10 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro 5

ALICE upgrades ALICE medium term upgrade strategy currently being discussed, several projects approved/being discussed: – New ITS, VHMPID, FOCAL, MFT,… Several testbeam periods will be definitely needed, both at SPS and PS – Clear interest in exploiting the low energy range (<10GeV/c), achievable at PS Need for reliable and “quickly” accessible beam facility 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro 6

ALICE upgrades PHOS DCal VHMPID FoCal New ITS MFT 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro 7

2012 beam request PS (T10): – FARICH: 2 wks  multi-layer aerogel focusing radiator with photosensitive matrix of dSiPM in the focal plane – VHMPID: 8 wks  : tests of pressurized, heated RICH prototypes with focusing mirrors and CsI photon detectors (MWPC and TGEM based) – PHOS: 1 wk  test new readout electronics – TOF: 6 wks  tests of MRPCs used in ALICE to (a) improve operation of current detectors (b) prototype better detectors. General R&D in timing detectors – FoCal: 3 wks  test of prototypes of FoCal detector plus electronics SPS: – FoCal: 1 wk – ITS: 4 wks  Test of silicon pixel and microstrip detector prototypes for the upgrade of the ALICE Inner Tracking System 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro Total: 20 weeks at PS (mainly in T10) and 5 weeks at SPS 8

ALICE feedback to the new T10 features Max beam momentum: 6GeV/c  12GeV/c – Very interesting: allows overlapping with SPS energy – Higher energy (e.g. 15GeV/c) would even be better Beam selectivity: rather pure electron or positron beam, hadron or muon beam – Very useful feature Better beam performance, better duty cycle – Highly interesting for obvious reasons Shorter exp. area: (e.g. 4.7m) – It is a problem: Cherenkov counters would still be needed Want to keep semi-permanently our tables/structures Existing services should be rebuilt – Gas, cabling,… 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro 9

Conclusions PS testbeam of strategic importance for ALICE Lots of upgrades in the future: testbeam requests will increase in number and length T10 particularly interesting for ALICE New features will make this beamline even more attractive for ALICE Exp. area length should not be reduced too much 1/2/12 East Area Upgrade Requirements from ALICE - A.Tauro 10
