“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me” Matthew 27:46 Christ’s Second Word From The Cross Expounded Upon by Pastor Fonda Hinkle, Sr. Pastor Emeritus Victory Tabernacle

Matthew And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Matthew And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. 33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Matthew And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over his head his accusation written, T HIS I S J ESUS T HE K ING O F T HE J EWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Matthew Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

Matthew Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,

Matthew 27 “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is to say, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

Hebrew Tradition and Scriptures To understand what and why Jesus cried this out, we must also understand the customs and educational culture of the Jewish people.

Hebrew Tradition and Scriptures When the Jewish people taught the Torah, Poetry, History and the teachings of their prophets, they used the entire Tenach (what Christians refer to as the “Old Testament”) but they did not have Chapter and Verse numbers. Instead they memorized and referred to scripture by quoting the first phrase contained in that scripture! So where else do we find this phrase in Scripture ?

Psalm 22 1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46: …my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?) why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? 2 O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. 5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.

Psalm 22 6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the L ORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. Matthew 27:30-31; And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him…. 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

Psalm 22 9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. 10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. 11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

Psalm My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. (Matthew 27:36 36 And sitting down they watched him there;)

Psalm They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. (Matthew 27:35 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.) 19 But be not thou far from me, O L ORD : O my strength, haste thee to help me. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

Jesus Was Saying… Look at what was said about YOUR Messiah by King David! I am proclaiming that I AM Messiah— the Anointed ONE you waited for! You should understand this! Although you don’t understand, I continue to place my trust in God my Father!

Did They Understand? In order to determine whether they understood, we must read below. What does the scripture tell us? Matthew 27:49 tell us that they still didn’t get it: “49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.” No, they did not; they thought he was calling for Elijah the prophet to save him.

They Couldn’t All Fully Understand John 12: Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

They Couldn’t All Fully Understand Romans 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.

Do YOU Understand? Do YOU understand what Jesus was saying? He was declaring that He is the Messiah, the Son of God, the Anointed One that can save YOU. What will YOU do with this TRUTH, the Good News that all you have to do is repent, accept Jesus and follow Him and you can be saved.
