Ephesians 6:16 “of faith” – Faith is a system of thinking. It is not lack of thinking or related to some emotional activity. The majority of everything we have ever learned was learned “by faith.” Just as we have received the Living Word by faith, so now we walk according to the Written Word – by faith (Colossians 2:6, 7). Faith-rest is the firing pin that launches Divine Viewpoint into the devil’s world.

Ephesians 6:16 One way we pick up & carry our shield is by applying the Word of God in normal situations of life (Hebrews 4:1-3). Remember that Bible doctrine is intensely practical as you face monotony & routine in life. God has a definite purpose for your life – as you realize His purpose, humdrum tasks take on zest. You can enjoy life, for you do what you do as unto the Lord! And remember, “faith comes by hearing, & hearing by the Word of God” (Rom. 10:17).

Ephesians 6:16 “with which you will be able” Future active indicative of dunami – anticipates the actual battle certain to follow incessant & careful training. You WILL be able to hold your ground in the face of the flaming missiles of the wicked one. “to quench (extinguish; put out) the fiery (flaming) darts (missile; dart; javelin; arrow)” “from the source of the wicked (ponēros; evil) one” These flaming missiles are things such as fear, worry, doubt, boredom, loneliness, bitterness, disappointment, adversity, prosperity, etc. – your soul is the arena of combat wherever you are at.

Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life Background is Exodus 17 & Numbers 20 (cf. Psalm 95:7-11). “Therefore” (3:7) – because of the celebrityship of Jesus Christ that has been discussed in the 1 st 2+ chapters. “If” (3:7) – 3 rd class condition (maybe you will & maybe you won’t). “Hear” (3:7) – aorist active indicative of akouō. “Voice” (3:7) – phōnē. Our strength is in standing still! Exodus 14:13

Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life Will you hear His voice when He says: Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ (Isaiah 41:10 NKJV) Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (I Peter 5:7 NKJV) Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22 NKJV) Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5, 6 NKJV) Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. English “sclerosis” – a hardening of a tissue or part; an increase of connective tissue at the expense of more active tissue; a hardening of a tissue or cell wall by thickening. “Hearts” (3:8) – kardia - cf. Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life “Rebellion” (3:8) – Hebrew “Meribah” (Exodus 17:7). They hardened their hearts through unbelief. (3:9) – God proved Himself, THEN He tested them. (3:10) – They didn’t even know (understand) (ginōskō) God’s ways (hodos – a way; a road; a systematic course of pursuit; a system of doctrine – “My categories of Bible doctrine”). (3:11) – They did not even know of the moment by moment Sabbath. (3:12) – “brethren” – fellow believers! They didn’t trust – they hit the panic button. We need to trust verses like Isaiah 40:31.
