Ten-year-old Chihiro and her parents are moving to a new town. While driving, they get lost. By accident they find an abandoned theme park. Curiously, the father leads his family through a tunnel, finding a strange world. In that world, her parents greedily help themselves while she refuses to eat. She wanders off and meets a boy named Haku. He warns her to escape with her parents. But it is late.When she returns, she finds her parents have turned into pigs, and the way back has become a deep river. Then Haku secretly takes Chihiro to a large bathhouse to hide. Haku tells her that she must get a job from the boiler man, Kamajii until he can help her recover her parents and escape.

With the help of the Grandpa Kamajii and a bathhouse servant girl named Lin, Chihiro is able to convince Grandma Tang (Yubaba), the elderly Witch and the owner of the bath house, to give her a job; in exchange, Chihiro is forced to give up her name and accept a new name "Sen". Chihiro is put to work with Lin, helping to bathe and serve the most difficult customers in the bathhouse. After she successfully bathes a special customer, the river spirit, she gets the magic medicine in return.

Haku is attacked by paper birds controlled by Grandma Qian (Zeniba), Yubaba's twin sister, because he had stolen and swallowed her seal under orders from Yubaba. There is a spell on the seal, so Haku is more dead than alive. Chihiro tries her best to help Haku and give him the magic medicine. Haku is saved, but he remains comatose, so Chihiro decides to visit Grangma Qian (Zeniba) and return the seal, hoping she can forgive Haku. Chihiro sets out, along with a spirit called No-Face, who terrorized the bathhouse and tried to earn the affection of Chihiro, Yubaba's pet raven, and Boh, Yubaba's son whom Zeniba had transformed into a mouse.

They arrives at Zeniba's house. Grangma Qian (Zeniba) is friendlier than expected, She explains that the seal spell has been broken by Chihiro's love and caring. She also tells Chihiro that she has broken the control from Grandma Tang (Yubaba) to Haku by accident. Then Zeniba and Chihiro's friends make a special hairband for Chihiro to show that her friends are with her, as well as for protection. In order to help Chihiro,recovered Haku makes an exchange with Grandma Tang(Yubaba).

Haku takes Chihiro back to the bathhouse, and tells her that Grangma Tang (Yubaba) will give her family freedom in exchange for returning Boh. When Chihiro is on the back of Haku, she realizes his real identity. He is the river spirit of the Kohaku River, who have saved her when she was a child. Chihiro's memory reminds Haku of his real name,which helps him break Grandma Tang (Yubaba)'s control completely.

At the bathhouse, Grandma Tang (Yubaba) gives Chihiro a test, she must find her parent by herself. Chihiro passes the test. Yubaba is forced to let her and her family go. Her family get free. Haku escorts her to the entrance, telling her not to look back. Chihiro rejoins her parents. They returns to their car,and continues to their new home.
