Ghana

Ghana Facts Ghana is a country in West Africa. The word Ghana means Warrior King. Ghana is a Low Income Economy. As well as cocoa, Ghana is one of the world's top gold producers.

Cocoa Beans and Ghana Known as Ghana's "black gold," cocoa beans grown in Ghana are sent to the UK and other countries in Europe where they are made into chocolate. Ghana produces 730 thousand tons of Cocoa beans every year!

Cocoa Production in Ghana In Ghana, the cocoa tree was introduced about 90 years ago. Cocoa is grown from seeds. Shady plants are grown to protect the seeds.

Continued…….. The crop is harvested from September to January. The pods are opened carefully so that the beans inside are not damaged. The beans and the sticky pulp surrounding them, are scraped out and placed in heaps on the ground and are covered with leaves to keep the heat which is produced by fermentation. Fermentation takes about six days.

Continued…… When the fermenting process is completed, the cocoa is dried in the Sun. When the beans are dry, they are put into bags ready for sale to the buyers ready to turn into chocolate, yum!
