Bahamian Mythology

Background Culture is rich with traditions and beliefs as well as legends and folklore. Myths were passed down from the 1 st generation of settlers on the islands, and others were born through what locals saw and made up from their environment. Most Bahamians are Christian. They focus mainly on two legends: Pretty Molly & Chickcharnies.

Pretty Molly Some believe her to be an elusive mermaid that lives in Pretty Molly Bay. Others say that she is the ghost of a slave that committed suicide by walking into the water. Many locals claim that she can be seen haunting the beach every night.

Chickcharnies They are found in Andros. Elfish, birdlike creatures with piercing red eyes. 3 fingers, 3 toes, and a tail which they use to hang upside down from trees. Legend says that if you see one and treat is with respect, you will be blessed with good luck for the rest of your life. If not, your head will spin all the way around.

Lost City of Atlantis Sunken city of Atlantis in the Bahamas. It is huge, flat stones that lay 20 feet under the North Bimini waters. They can be seen through the water and are known as the Bimini Road.

Lusca Half shark, half octopus, and lurks in the Caribbean and found around Andros. Also a female known as the “Guardian of the Blue hole” She is said to be very mean and likes to drown divers and explorers who are not careful. If you are in a boat over the blue hole, she will pull it under water.

Anansi The spider god. Half spider and half man. Anansi is a legend brought over by the slaves and it says he is known as a trickster and a hero. He has the power to endow people with the spirit of rebellion, the courage to fight for freedom, and the desire to unite or destroy kingdoms.
