Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate Directorate Diversity Working Group Completed and received approval for Directorate Diversity Plan. Vision: The Suborbital and Special Orbital Directorate (SSOPD) (Code 800) is committed to further scientific, educational and economic advancement by providing the facilities and expertise to enable frequent flight opportunities for a diverse customer base. To that end, all SSOPD employees respect, appreciate, and value individual differences, which help up capitalize on the strengths of a diverse workforce to better perform our mission through teamwork and innovation. Will be reviewed yearly. Includes performance metrics. Thanks to Judy Vucovich.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate Wallops Forum for a Changing Workforce General/frank discussions about quality of worklife and environment at Wallops. Refocusing to current needs at WFF. Solicit general employee input and concerns, information distribution, WEB page with input field, Action follow up, Predetermined topics for discussion. Expanded membership. Changes to meeting format and location.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate  WFF Mentoring Program  Mid-point evaluations held in July  Seven (7) of 11 pairs elected to continue beyond 6-month program.  Closing program on December 13 th.  Status briefing held in September  Plans underway for 2003 program.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate  Training  Supervisors completed Individual Development Plan (IDP) training in October  Emphasis on IDP’s for all technicians at Wallops.  Supervisors completed disability awareness training in September 2002.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate  American Heritage Week Celebration on October 7-10, 2002  10/7 – Ribbon Cutting for Wallops Timeline; Mr. Diaz participated.  Contests, workshops, and demonstrations.  10/8 – Celebrate Wallops Day; Mr. Townsend participated.  Bill addressed WFF employees, Colloquium, awards, workshops, displays, food and crafts stands, local entertainment.  10/9 – Video Series.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate  American Heritage Week Celebration (cont.)  10/10 – International Luncheon – Sponsored by Equal Opportunity Committee on Minorities and Persons with Disabilities.  Great participation – employees supplied many and varied dishes from Empanadillas to Beanie Weenies.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate  Suborbital Center of Excellence  Collaborative effort between Code 820, Balloon Projects Office, New Mexico State University and PSL to improve Education and Career Opportunities for Minority Students focusing on Sub-Orbital Science and Engineering.  Dedication 4/24/02.  Will aide; New Mexico State Students, K-12 students and teachers in local and outlying areas.  Includes Co-op opportunities at WFF.  Balloons, Sounding Rockets, and UAV of prime importance–Dryden is also evolving some UAV work supported there.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate  Women of Wallops Federal Women’s Program  Women’ History Month (March) - Pam McGrath story of Victoria C. Woodhull.  August 2002 presented Hope Mihalap - Discussed “How Thing’s have changed.”  OHR has established opportunity for 1-year OHR detail assignment at Wallops.  Training opportunities and QWL issues will be high priorities of the detail.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate Quality of Worklife  Morning Coffees will continue; last one was well attended, significant interaction in conjunction with American Heritage Week.  Center Director’s Colloquium held at Wallops in conjunction with American Heritage Week. Mr. David DeNotaris was guest speaker. A Center Director’s Colloquium was also held March Mr. Brian Holloway was guest speaker.

Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate Plans:  Generate a Diversity Homepage linked to Wallops Homepage (may be multi-directorate).  Discuss with other directorates at Wallops feasibility of Wallops Diversity Plan.  Assign new members to the Directorate Diversity Working Group.  Advertise job openings in places where a more diverse talent pool can be reached.
