English Language Arts / Grade 8 Mrs. King Room 210

Classroom Materials Two composition notebooks-One for journal writing and one for note-taking. Both will be kept in class unless told otherwise. Loose leaf paper Black or blue pen and/or pencils A highlighter Pocket folders PLANNER!!!

The Course Welcome!!! Welcome!!! Welcome!!! Required reading from Elements in Literature. 50 per cent of what we will be reading will be informational text. Novels Poetry Essays/Critical Lens Literary terms Independent Reading projects. NYS Exams – Three exams to track student growth

Class Room Etiquette We raise our hands to contribute to class discussions. We listen to each other when someone is speaking. Respect the building, the property and the people who work here on your behalf. Hall passes are available for your use to the girls or boys room. However…You MUST sign out before leaving. You need as much time in class as possible.

Each day… Come to class on time. Be respectful of your classmates. Be prepared to start class each day with notebook and pen or pencil. Notebooks will be checked on regular basis. YOU are responsible for all assignments and points will be taken off for late work. If you are ill, the guidance office can arrange for assignments to be sent home. Check my web site or Mrs. Riecker’s web site for assignments.

Monitoring your progress Each day you will be asked to assess or review what you have done in class. This is based on the work you do and the behavior you demonstrate in the classroom. Behavioral issues will result in phone calls or meeting with your parents. We will work together to ensure the educational process is not interrupted.

Now…a few more suggestions Be curious Ask questions if you are having difficulty. Use after school help! I will be available for after school each Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7 A.M. TO 7:45 A.M. Or by appointment. I can also be reached by

Homework – Due Friday- September 7, 2012 Course syllabus-Reviewed and signed by yourself and your parents. Finish interview exercise. Notebook, pocket folders and journal to be brought to class.
