PhD Program  Provides students with the opportunities for advanced scholarship and professional growth.  Prepares graduates for leadership roles in higher education, research and specialized practice in governmental or private human service organizations.

Why Choose a PhD at Laurier?  Supportive environment for an incoming class of five or six full-time PhD students and one or two part-time students each year.  Faculty members are involved teachers, mentors and researchers whose work is recognized locally, nationally and internationally.  With diverse backgrounds and perspectives, faculty represent a broad range of interests in leading edge social research.

Why Choose a PhD at Laurier?  Faculty with solid practice backgrounds – balance of academic learning, research and practice.  Students have the opportunity to develop excellence in teaching and research.  We offer a four year minimum guaranteed funding package.

Criteria for Admission to PhD Program Normally,  MSW degree (other graduate degrees considered)  Minimum GPA of A-  At least 3 years post-MSW social work experience  Professional competence  Clear and creative thinking  Ability to pursue independent study

Deadline for Applications For Both Full-time and Part-time Programs:  January 15, 2016

Minimum Guaranteed Funding  Ensures that doctoral students receive a minimum of $19,000 in financial support for four years of doctoral-level study.  The MGF package may come from a variety of sources including:  internal awards  external awards  teaching assistantships  research assistantships

Eligibility Requirements for Minimum Guaranteed Funding  Students must be registered full-time.  Must maintain cumulative GPA of 10 (A-).  During first year, PhD students must apply for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (if eligible).  During second & third year, PhD students must apply for a SSHRC or CIHR award.  Must submit a satisfactory progress report by July 1 st each year.

Field Learning Option  May focus on advanced clinical practice, policy issues or international development among other possibilities.  An experience that will advance the student’s ability to conduct rigorous research that will have relevance for social work practice.  Students doing a field learning option are exempt from Doctoral Seminar and elective course.
